With his documentary Food Inc. (Bafici, 2009), Robert Kenner had exposed the US food industry and its pleats in an abrasive, thorough, intelligent, terrifying and informed manner. Now, he repeats the operation: he takes a non-fiction book (Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming) as a base and uses it as the catalyzer for an incisive film that delivers an illustrated story of lobbyism and its greatest hits –from tobacco to the current denial of global warming, including oil companies and fireproof materials. Kenner insists on looking for needles in haystacks, and manages to do so without being indifferent to both sides: his wisdom lies on the fact that his denunciation doesn’t need to convince anyone, and yet that doesn’t diminish his power –or his reflexes. Kenner exhibits the pretense and mirror games looking for the obvious surface of the lie, but also questions –microscopically– why it seduces billions of consumers so easily. JMD
