What is happening in the basements of Austria? In the wake of 2009’s infamous Fritzl case, even international media have been asking the question, but Ulrich Seidl tackled it way before –then had to put In the Basement on hold for several years to finish his epic Paradise trilogy (shown at Bafici ‘13). All for the better, since in typical Seidl fashion, this film has little to do with recent headlines, but a lot with the general mindset giving birth to such extremes. Down in the cellar, people indulge their fantasies, be it an S/M-couple or a little man rhapsodizing about the orgasmic projectile powers of his huge sperm load, a gun nut who loves to sing opera or a traditional brass group playing and drinking amidst their beloved historical devotionalia, especially of the Nazi sort... A tight, but associative montage of typical Seidl tableaux, in which the human and the grotesque, the comical and the troubling play out in subversive little melodies: You could call it the first full-fledged Seidl musical... with a vengeance, of course.
