If documentary is an endless genre is not just because it can take any element in the world (a person, a city, or an object) and turn it into its subject, but rather because of the endless ways it can portray and question that element. In the case of Mudmen, the eye is on an old man who lives in Rio Negro and makes bricks out of mud. A young interviewer dialogues with this hermit worker: he inquires about his business and listens to him deliver his view of life. At the same time, and like a sky that gets darker, the man’s story is hovered by images of a sensual and apathetic woman in the apartment from where the young man left from: she masturbates, draws, and sleeps. Mudmen avoids the comfort zone of clarifying its intentions to spectators, and moves through two parallel universes that end up connecting by the rhythm of a song by Coiffeur that seems to ask each one of them to “abandon his lair / occupy his place / in a different space”.
