Like Nerves, this is one the few films not set in Berlin. But the nightlife of Hamburg looks similiar to that of The Blue Angel. Shot in a modern “New Sobriety” realism, with fast editing and crossfading, this film is a look on the demi-monde, the world of hookers, gangsters and pimps. Director Werner Hochbaum, a socialist who later arranged with the Nazis, simpathized with their anarchic values and their common contempt for “law and order.” This is Weimar independent cinema; actors are professionals but not stars. One song is from famous workers‘ poet Ernst Busch.
