Just four years after Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler wrote this first real stream-of-consciousness novel in literature, the film version was done. It’s a story combining stock-market hysteria with melodrama, where a girl is forced to sell herself for the sake of her father’s fortune. Shot during the first Olympic winter games, it gives marvelous insight into the lifestyle of the Weimar jet-set. But the most fascinating aspect is the modern aestetics: with long shots, one of the first camera-moves, and great acting, this female portrait looks like an Antonioni film before Antonioni. One of the best works (and the last European film) of Metropolis cinematographer Karl Freund, who as well worked with Murnau and Rutmann.
