An example of a totally different expressionism, Nerves does not show the lopsided walls of Caligari, no theatrical overacted gestures, no eccentric make-up, but an expressionism of the soul. The story shows a bourgeois family in decline, post-war-crisis meets revolution: The director filmed during the real communist uprising, showing hysteric mass-scenes. The visual language works with flamboyant colours, double exposure, big scenery and naturalist insight into old Munich. All in all Nerves is one of the best films of that time –an example for the invasion of subconsciousness into the German screen.
