Machine Cancer is a film as intriguing as its title leads us to assume. The directors are bold enough to go from a human-scale shaped and designed portrait –which stonily observes the people from Médanos, a town in the south of the Buenos Aires province– to the enigmatic detail shots of frogs catching insects in the dark. The first minutes have no dialogue; people in a quiet city, street announcements, trucks on the road to a saline where what seems to be the town’s main activity revolves insistently, are all elements of the same importance, and thus the same interest: the camera can take some time framing a road as seen from a moving car, or the workers that punch their cards with a merry electronic music in the background. The film reaches almost hypnotic peaks while suggesting the vortex of a world that hopes to be looked at as if it was the first time. DO
