“The beach awaits below the pavement, but what lies beyond the city?”, actor Ian McShane’s voice over asks at a magical moment of How We Used to Live. The city is London, and it is spread out here through the protein-filled archive of the British Film Institute like a huge tapestry, or a landscape, or an epic visual poem. From its reconstruction after the war, London hasn’t stopped growing in series, which this documentary (?) displays as if working with miniatures. People getting on and off the trains, people dancing, people drinking, endless views of brick houses, ominous views of the 1970s council houses, beautiful people in Carnaby Street, and punks in King’s Road. The soundtrack by Pete Wiggs (Saint Etienne) replaces all the songs that could have dated the footage. And that’s so much better: to have the footage move us with its non-narrative neutrality and the music convince us it’s the only possible source for this prodigy. FG
