María (an unstoppable Isabelle Huppert) is not planning on leaving her coffee plantation in Cameroon nor her ideal of resistance, which is not only political. When the French army, from a helicopter in retreat, tells her that it’s her last chance for going back to France and leaving the hostile place where she lives with her family, she flips them off and gives back the provisions the soldiers had thrown out of charity as though they are grenades. María is all determination and strength, but that strength isn’t natural at all because, in order to escape the alienation, it wouldn’t appear to be enough to just stay away from the pleasures of capitalism. Her nature renders her hypnotic and lovable, even if her desperation puts her ex-husband, her son and the people she herself wants to help at risk. White Material is a brave and disarming look –which is not at all located at the helicopter’s height but, rather, at ground level– on personal frustrations as an ideological driving force. And, at the same time, and avoiding any kind of cynicism, Claire Denis shows us that world which, in any case, needs to be fixed. DA
