“We are game machines,” “an actor is like a blind person walking confidently towards a cliff.” The lady of icy and cutting beauty who seems to gloat on being evil on the screen turns out to be a shy and warm person, capable of acting like a big child while also presenting herself (and her craft) with enviable depth. Toubiana sets out on a sports journey: following the huge Isabelle Hupert for a year. What happens in a year? She shoots with Chabrol, Assayas, and Haneke, who give the redhead the most reverential of treatments. She does a play in Avignon –Medea nonetheless. She poses for innumerable photo sessions. She answers endless questions in Cannes. She buys bread in Paris. She lives. We see her as a stripped-down queen who lives in the pure present with well-channeled whims. She’s deceivingly transparent. Our privilege is to see her at work, playing, being scared before a play (yes, she’s also vulnerable), being both omnipresent and subtle. Everyone enjoys her presence, even Haneke who we see smiling all the time, a picture as scary as the character Huppert plays in The Piano Teacher. GS
