He was born in Philadelphia, US, in 1912. He started working in Hollywood in the forties as screenwriter in such films as Cobra Woman (Robert Siodmak) and Key Largo (John Huston). He directed The Brothers Karamazov (1958), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and The Professionals (1966), among other films. He died in March, 1992.
